John Clinton Bankston was one of 10 teens killed when the bus they were on was swept into the Guadalupe in the 1987 Guadalupe River flood. John's body was never recovered, but he is honored at the Bristol Cemetery as well as Laurel Oaks Memorial Park in Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas.

On July 17, 1987, a bus from the Pot O' Gold Ranch camp near Comfort, Texas was swept off a bridge over the Guadalupe River by suddenly rising floodwaters. Of the 43 persons on board, 33 survived, many due to the rescue efforts of high school football star John Bankston, Jr. Without regard for his own safety, John rescued many campers from the raging river before being swept away. His body was never recovered, but few can boast of a more beautiful final resting place.
