In 1853 Theodore "Theo" Bauerfeind left the port of Bremen, Germany, travelling alone at age of 23, and arrived in Baltimore, MD, on the bark 'Beta'. His origin was Laufen, Germany/Austria, and his destination was Tennessee. On the manifest his name appears as 'Fr. Th. Bauerfeind'; other records he is Theodore Ferdinana Moritz Bauerfeind.

He arrived in Van Buren Co., TN, a carpenter by trade, and became a member of the Mason Mountain Lodge #261 at Spencer, Van Buren Co., TN.

In 1856 in TN he married Sarah C. Fleming of White County, TN.

Theodore was a member of the Spencer Home Guard in the Civil War, and just prior to the start of the war, he removed many of the library books from Burritt College and hid them. Much of the College was heavily damaged during the war, but it was rebuilt, and Theo was part of the reconstruction, along with his new friend and Civil War veteran, Maj. Martin White of Van Buren, who became Burritt's first post-war president.

The Bauerfeinds are listed in Spencer, Van Buren Co., TN in 1860. In the early part of 1871 they moved to Lampasas, Lampasas Co., TX, travelling with Maj. Martin White and his family. Some of the White family had moved to nearby Hamilton Co., TX in 1860, before the war.

In Lampasas, Theo was commissioned by John Markward to build him a homestead of native white stone, about a mile from downtown Lampasas. (NOTE: John was born in Prussia, had arrived in America through Indianola, TX in 1852, and became one of the early pioneers of Lampasas in 1857. He married Adelphia White, daughter of Maj. Martin White.)

Theo first built this four room residence with a wrap around porch, completed in 1875, in which John resided and after John's marriage to Adelpia White, they lived there while Theo built a larger homestead, in the same style, and completed it by 1883. For the interior floors, trim and wainscotting, some of the finest lumber of the time was hauled by ox cart from New Orleans.

After Sarah's death, Theo resided in Austin, TX with son Julius and his young family; Theo died there. He and Sarah were both buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas, TX.

Children of Theodore and Sarah (Fleming):

Helena Bauerfeind, b.1857, TN, listed in 1860 in Van Buren, presumably died young.

Julia Bauerfeind, b.1859, TN, d.1930, OK. (FAG#36890737). Married James W. Green, (#36890727), resided in Oklahoma City, OK and had children.

Gertrude Bauerfeind, b.1873, TX. Married (?) Miller and had at least a son, Louis Elliott Miller, b.1893 TX, d.1967, Fort Worth, TX, (FAG#69686621). In 1900 he resided with his mother and grandparents in Lampasas, Lampasas Co., TX. He married Louisa (Merrenfield), b.1895, TX. By 1930-40 they resided in Fort Worth, TX, her widowed mother with them. Gertrude and Louis's burial locations unknown at this time.

(Biographical information submitted by Annette Markward, wife of John Markward, great grandson of John Markward and Adelphia (White) of Lampasas, TX.)
