Wayne C. Overturf of 1407 Roberta Drive, Murphysboro, formerly of Peoria, Ill., died Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Rehab and Care Center of Jackson County. He was 83.

Wayne was born April 20, 1925, in Meta, Mo., the son of V.M. Overturf and Martha Jane (Roberts) Overturf.

He was the grandson of William Martin Overturf and Isabelle Sarah (Norris) Overturf of Ashley Road in Mount Vernon, Ill.

Wayne married June Knapp on July 19, 1947, in Dahlgren, Ill. Mrs. Overturf preceded her husband in death on Sept. 4, 2005.

His brother, William Overturf of Andrews, Texas; and sister, Mildred Kriege of St. Louis, Mo., also preceded him in death.

Surviving is one son, Daniel, of Murphysboro. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Robert Kriege of St. Louis, Mo.; and sister-in-law, Lesley Hughes of Shelby, N.C.

A WWII veteran, Wayne proudly served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was transferred to the USS Cumberland Sound (AV-17) in the Pacific Ocean in 1944 and served there until his discharge. His rank at discharge was aviation metalsmith 3/C.

After the war, he was employed by the Air National Guard in Peoria; the George E. Failing Company in Enid, Okla.; and R.G. LeTourneau Inc./LeTourneau-Westinghouse/WABCO/Dresser Haulpak in Peoria, Indianapolis and Toccoa, Ga. After 36 years with the company, serving in a variety of positions and making many good friends, Wayne retired from Dresser in 1987.

He continued to reside on Bigelow Street in Peoria, enjoying the companionship of his neighbors until 2005, when he moved to Murphysboro to be near his son.

Wayne was a member of the Ancient and Free Accepted Masons for 56 years and was a life-member in the Schiller Lodge 335 in Bartonville, Ill.

Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens with military rites.
