Henry Edward Sullivan was the eighth of nine children and the fifth son of Joseph Ely and Theresa Barbara (Holly originally Holy) Sullivan. He was born April 16, 1886 in San Patricio County, Texas at the family home at Round Lake. His mother's widow's pension declaration gives his birth as 1884, but this date is likely incorrect because of his christening date.

He was christened on May 6, 1886 in the Catholic Church in San Patricio by Father Ed Smythe. His sponsors were Millie Wood and John Sullivan.

Henry grew up on the family ranch and worked as a rancher most of his life. He retired from the Welder Ranch in San Patricio County where he was the ranch foreman for many years. He also served the people of Texas as one of the early Texas Rangers.

He married Sarah Josephine McFall on June 11, 1913 in the Catholic Church in Skidmore, Bee County, Texas, with Father Michael Puig officiating.

Henry and Josephine were the parents of two sons and five daughters.
