The family went immediately to the state of Missouri and settled in a tiny river town called Charette in Warren County, where they can be found on the 1860 US Census. In 1861 a brother, Frank, was born. In 1864, a sister Lena Caroline was born. The town of Charette was located near a river and the direction of the river changed such that people had to evacuate. By the 1870 US Census, they were living in Pinckney, Warren County, Missouri. Unfortunately, this small river town would suffer a similar fate as Charette, and again they had to leave.
In 1868, in Stoddard County, Missouri, Kate married William Hodge. They had three sons: William F. (1869-1971); Fredrick (1874-1897) and Austin (1876-1878). Kate's youngest son, Austin died in 1878. In the 1880 US Census, Kate and her oldest son William are listed as servants at a home of the Rankins in Chariton County, Missouri (he's listed as being 13, but his actual age is 11) Fredrick is listed as being a student.
On January 6,1881, Kate married Michael Sauer. They had four daughters: Anna Barbara (1881-1958); Alice (1883-1900); Rosa (1886-1969) and Sophia (1889-1950). They lived on a farm which eventually included an apple orchard.
Kate's son, Fredrick died of a gunshot wound in 1897 and her daughter, Alice, died of typhoid fever in 1900.
Kate and Michael were married for 48 years before his death in 1929. Kate died at her home in 1932.
