He married Elizabeth Gumpf August 12, 1857, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was the father of Emma (b. 06/26/52), Anna (b. 04/07/56), John (b. 06/10/57), and Elizabeth (b. 09/01/60), In 1860, he was a plasterer living with his family in Lancaster, but his wife died on July 27, 1861. Despite having four small children, he went to war and left York Countian Daniel Strasbaugh to serve as his children's guardian. Their relationship is uncertain.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 16, 1861, as a private with Co. G, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, then promoted to 1st sergeant October 4, 1861, and to 2nd lieutenant to date August 22, 1862. Wounded in the knee and captured at the battle of Chickamauga either on September 19 or 20, 1863, he was held in captivity until his death at Atlanta, Georgia.

His surname was almost certainly spelled "Strausbaugh" but pronounced in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect as "Strasbach."

Prisoner of War. Alternate spelling of last name: Strasbach.

His surname WAS most likely spelled "Strasbaugh" . That is the spelling used by my branch of the family up to the present day. The spelling in the French(Lorraine) parish records was "Strasbach" . See the records for Saulxures(Bas Rhin) and Hurbache(Vosges), for example. This was the original spelling and not just the pronunciation. In any case, my family is very proud of Frederick's service and sacrifice.
