County Citizen Found Murdered In Bed Saturday.

John Sigmon, 57, farmer is found by grandson at his home. An investigation is being conducted.
No clues upon which to work have been secured.

Complete mystery surrounds the slaying of John Sigmon, 57, prosperous farmer residing several miles northeast of Bassett in the Bowen's Creek community, his lifeless and stiff body found lying across a bed in his home Saturday morning by a little grandson, son of Harvey Sigmon of north Bassett.

Sigmon had received the entire contents of a shell from a shotgun fired from short range, the assassin apparently having fired the fatal shot while standing on the outside of the building and aiming through a window at his victim. The man had been dead several hours when county J. W. Simmons of Martinsville reached the scene and made an examination of the body.

It was learned that Sigmon's wife and son were called away from the home Friday night and only he and his little grandson were occupants of the house during the night.

The little grandson made the gruesome discovery about 7 o'clock Saturday morning. He ran to a neighbor of the Sigmon's who in turn communicated with county authorities.

Coroner Simmons said in his findings the muzzle of the shotgun was only a few feet away when the weapon was fired, judging from the manner in which the contents of the shell took effect in his body. Sigmon was standing erect, the shot entered the body just back of the right lung and ranged in the direction of the heart. Death was instantaneous.

Davis with other county authorities have been conducting an investigation into the shooting, but no information has been secured that would lead to arrest. Members of the family can attribute no motive for the shooting.

Coroner Simmons in rendering a verdict stated that Sigmon had been murdered by a person or persons unknown.
