Rita Eleanora (McLaughlin) Morris, 94, of Prairie City, died Feb. 22, 2008 at Blue Mountain Hospital. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008 at Prairie City United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dan Benson officiating. A committal service will follow at Prairie City Cemetery.
She was born July 14, 1913, to Murray Glen and Julia Catherine (Overturf) McLaughlin in Edgar, Neb. She graduated from high school in Basin, Wyo. and went on to nursing school at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill. However, she came down with rheumatic fever and was unable to finish nursing school.
On Sept. 2, 1934, she married Rolly Craig Morris in Basin, Wyo. She enjoyed being a homemaker, but also worked at the Eureka Fishery in Calif. for many years. She liked to read and embroider and also enjoyed horseback riding and spending time with her family. She was baptized a Methodist. She raised a family of six children and instilled the values of education, empathy and good old fashioned morals. She and her family lived in Wyoming, Washington, California, Alaska and finally, Oregon.
Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her parents, Murray Glen and Julia Catherine McLaughlin; brothers, John Laurence McLaughlin and Murray David McLaughlin; sister, Julia Fern Morris; daughter, Kathleen Elizabeth Gamble; and grandson, Will Dean Morris. Her husband, Rolly Craig McLaughlin, died in 2003.
She is survived by her children, William Craig Morris, Kevin, Mo.; Rita Anne Lorenzen, Eureka, Calif.; John Clayton Morris, Prairie City; Barbara Christine Lewis, Prairie City; and David Lee Morris, Casper, Wyo. She is also survived by her sisters, Wilma Jeannette Morris, Cody, Wyo.; Mina Merle Cook, Twin Falls, Idaho; and Shirley Glen McLaughlin, Salmon, Idaho; brothers, Irvin Keith McLaughlin, Texas; George Freeman McLaughlin, Baker City; and William Dale McLaughlin, Montana. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
