Martha Carolyn Schultz Hicks, 72, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in her home outside of Grey Forest, Texas, after a 1-1/2-year battle against colon cancer.

She was born Jan. 12, 1936, in Floresville, the only child of Sewell McCarty and Ivor Hughes Schultz. She graduated from Floresville High School in 1954 and from San Antonio College two years later.

On June 23, 1956, she married Edward Ross Hicks of San Antonio, with whom she had three daughters.

The couple soon transferred to Germany for the first of two European tours of duty, both primarily based in West Germany. They settled in San Antonio in 1971, upon Ed's retirement.

In the mid-1970s, Hicks returned to college to complete a bachelor's degree in urban studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1978. In 1988, she completed a master's degree in public administration.

Martha began her career at the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and was a real estate broker for many years.

She was a Girl Scout leader for more than 20 years, a member of the Floresville Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star. In addition, she was a member of the American Business Women's Association; in 1989, the association bestowed on her the national honor of "Woman of the Year." She also was a proud member
of the UTSA Alumni Association.

In her free time, Martha loved gardening and reading, and was an avid Spurs fan. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Helotes.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 50 years, Edward Ross Hicks, in 2006.

She is survived by her daughters, Lisa McMillen and husband Kenneth of New Caney and their two sons, Christopher and Pedro, Laura Hicks, who lived with her, and Lesli Hicks and husband Steven Lee of the Helotes area, and their daughter, Joy, and son, Grayson.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church in Helotes, and Friday at 11 a.m. in the Floresville Church of Christ in Floresville.
