RICE, Carl Venton age 74 of Vandalia passed away Friday, January 23, 2009 in Miami Valley Hospital. He was born in Hazzard, Kentucky on February 17, 1934 the son of Carlo & Elsie Mae (Sheets) Rice. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War and an active member of the Vandalia Baptist Temple. Carl enjoyed the reunions each year with his shipmates from the USS Rupertus.
He is survived by his wife Mary (Irby) Carter Rice, children Linda (Tim) Lawson of Tipp City, David (Fran) Rice of West Milton, Lisa (Jim) Derringer of Lewisburg, step children Jerry (Vicki) Carter of Englewood, Donna Arndts of Vandalia, grandchildren Mike and Cathy Derringer, William Rice, Erin Smith, and Kyle Wright, step grandchildren Stacie (Dan) Stevens, Ryan (Nikki) Carter, and Brett (Jennifer) Carter, step great grandchildren Zach, Jake, Hannah, Emma Carter, Haley Carter, and Jonathon and Benjamin Stevens, and a sister Teresa (Dean) Wright of New Lebanon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Evelyn Rice first wife Joan (Osborn) Rice, and 2 brothers. Carl was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and will be missed by everyone.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the BLESSING FUNERAL HOME, (formerly Jennings) 11900 N. Dixie Dr., Tipp City with Pastors Rick Washburn and Randy Washburn officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Tipp City. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12:00 to 2:00 pm in the funeral home.
