SAN ANGELO - William E. Lewis passed away on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2008 at South Austin Hospital in Austin, Texas. He was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully after a brief illness. William was born June 28, 1921, in Ryan, Okla. As a child he moved to Leveretts Chapel in East Texas. In 1941, William joined the army to serve in World War II. He served in North Africa, Italy, and Germany. On June 18, 1949, he married the love of his life, Billie Sue Reed. After 49 years of marriage, she preceded him in death in 1998. William is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Gail Lewis of Windsor, Colo., and Doug and Teddia Lewis of Austin, Texas. He is survived by one brother, A.J. Lewis and his wife Louise of Fort Worth, Texas. He will be dearly missed by the joys of his life, his four granddaughters, Ginger Stewart and her husband Rob of Windsor, Colo., Tia Lewis of Greeley, Colo., Aubree Shay and her husband Patrick of San Antonio, and Danielle Lewis of San Antonio. He will also be missed by his very dear friends, Jerry and Alice Bruner. William spent his professional career in the oil fields of East and West Texas. He retired from Arco Oil and Gas Company in Monahans, Texas, after 32 years. William was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Danville Lodge #101 in Kilgore, Texas. William and Billie Sue were members of Hillcrest Baptist Church in San Angelo for the last 19 years. He served as a deacon there and at Immanuel Baptist Church in Monahans before moving to San Angelo. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at HILLCREST BAPTIST CHURCH in San Angelo. Graveside service will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. William's grandchildren will serve as his pallbearers.
