James served in the Confederate Army for the duration of the war.
He married Mary Ann Bean sometime around 1867. To this union were born sons William B. Bolding and James Porter Bolding. William preceded both parents in death in 1885 at the age of 17. Mary Ann died in 1904.
At some point, James remarried, to Cynthia (no other name known at this time), and the couple relocated to San Angelo, Texas, where James' son James Porter was living. He worked as a shoemaker in San Angelo, and died 12 Mar 1917. It is unsure where James is buried and this marker in Fairmount Cemetery is thought to be a cenotaph.
