After Mary's husband Thomas died in 1846, she and the younger 3 children, Jesse, James, Tabitha, and Vileta remained in Mahaska County, Iowa. Tabitha died in 1847.

Mary is listed as the head of the household in the 1850 FEDERAL CENSUS IN MAHASKA COUNTY, IOWA where she is listed as being 47 years of age, born in South Carolina. Jess is 25, and James is 17, and Violetta is 10 years old. The boys were born in Kentucky and are listed as farmers. Violetta is listed as being born in Illinois.

Mary will pass away in 1852 and Violetta in 1853. It is believed Jesse and James both headed for Utah to join their sisters and their families who were already there. In some Mormon records, James McClure Ballinger is listed as a missionary with the Mormon faithful.
