TRAGEDY OCCURS AT HOME YESTERDAY WHEN SHE POLISHES STOVE

Mrs. Lou Eva Lance, 57, wife of Edward Lance, met a tragic death yesterday at her home on the old Rend City road a half mile east of the Big Muddy River.

Alone in the home at 9:30 o'clock she decided to polish her kitchen stove and was using a highly explosive liquid. She probably believed that the fire had died out, but the rag she was using suddenly burst into flames, spreading to the pan containing the liquid, and the explosion which followed enveloped her body with fire.

Her screams attracted neighbors and when they arrived found Mrs. Lance using other clothing in a frantic effort to put out the flames, but her body had already been badly burned from her shoulders to the knees.

Medical attention was given as soon as it was possible to reach the Lance home, it being practically isolated on account of impassable roads.

Death relieved her agonies at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, but it was not until around 4:00 o'clock that the Freeman Funeral Home was notified. The body was removed there at 7 o'clock last evening after being hauled some two miles in a wagon to the ambulance, which could not proceed to the home on account of there being practically no bottom to the road.

Coroner D. J. Clayton viewed the body this morning and after hearing the evidence of those familiar with the tragic affair, decided that the formality of an inquest was unnecessary.

Mrs. Lance was a daughter of Thomas and Cordelia Lampley Hatchett and was born in Northern Twp. in the Webb's Hill community. Early in life she was united in marriage to C. E. Moore and some three years ago was wedded to Lance.

Besides the husband, she is survived by the following: Three sons, Robert Moore, at home; Paul and Chalon Moore in Chicago; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Mathis, Chicago; Mrs. Connie Jenkins and Mrs. Hazel Whittington, both of Benton; Mrs. Lillie Wayman, of Whittington. She leaves one brother, Lawrence Hatchett, Benton, and two sisters, Mrs. Dora Clark and Mrs. Iva Sullivan, also of Benton. She was a half sister to Fred, Sherman and Vallie Hatchett and Mrs. Dollie Shepard, Benton, and Mrs. Martha Smith, Thompsonville. The step-mother, Mrs. Mary Hatchett, also survives, together with two stepsons and one step-daughter, James, Raymond, and Audria Lance, all at home.

Funeral services will be held at the East Benton Baptist Church of which she was a member, tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock, with the Rev. J. B. Maulding officiating.
Interment will follow at the Phillips Cemetery with the Freeman Funeral Home in charge.
