Joseph Willis Nichols was born June 6, 1825 in Barren county, Kentucky. He was the son of Richard Nichols and Margaret Burch.

Joseph was married to Sarah A. Pursley on June 24, 1847 in Barren county, Kentucky. They had five children: Selbourne, Ursela, Amanda, Samuel and Mary. Information given to us was that Sarah died on May 19, 1908 in Solida, Colorado.

He died of disease on November 12, 1864 in Little Rock, Arkansas
