Nancy Ella Brewer was born at Ft. Gibson, Indian Territory on January 23, 1853 to John and Elizabeth (Taylor) Brewer. She married 3 times and had 5 children, 3 of which survived her at her time of death.
Her first husband, Samuel Houston Allen, died shortly after their marriage. He was 11 years older than she. They had no children.
Her second husband, Franklin Pierce West, died in a gun battle with Sam Starr on 12/17/1886. Together, they had three children – John Brewer West, Richard West & Ruth Ella West who died as an infant, 9 months of age.
Her third husband, James A. Kash survived her when she passed away on March 26, 1909. Together, they had two sons – James Monroe Kash and Perry Kash who died as an infant, 1 year of age.
Nancy was a beautiful Cherokee woman. She worked hard at building a home for her family and endured the loss of two husbands and two children. During her marriage to Franklin, she always feared for his life, being an Indian Police Officer. They lived in close proximity to Belle and Sam Starr – Sam being a 2nd cousin of Franklin's. As history has shown, Sam and Belle weren't always on the right side of the law, and one fateful day, 12/17/1886, Nancy's fears were realized when Franklin and Sam shot and killed each other. Their two boys were 11 and 7 years old. Franklin was buried with their daughter, Ruthie, who had passed away 2 years earlier.
Nancy lived to be 56 years old. She is buried at Briartown Cemetery near her first and third husbands. Franklin was buried at McClure Cemetery – which at the time was a West/Brewer family cemetery until the land was sold to the McClure family.
Her granddaughter, Lucy Ella West, was named after her. Lucy was a family historian and West family encyclopedia until her death at 100 years of age. She always spoke of missing her "Granny" who had passed away when she was not quite 5 years old.
There are times I wish I could go back in time to visit with my ancestors, get to know them personally. I just hope Nancy is happy with my efforts to include her life history in a format where others may find her and get to know a little about her.
Dawes Roll #4464 (last name spelled Cash), Miller Roll #6943.
