Francis was the eldest of four sons born to Laurence Witman and Elizabeth Gidin Witman.

On Aug. 16, 1817, he migrated with his parents and a sibling on the ship "Xenophon" through the Port of Philadelphia. His family soon moved to Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.

He and his brothers were enumerated three times in a list of poor children whose educational fees had to be paid by Bucks Co.

The Goshenhoppen Register 1741-1819 records that Francis married Susanna Melcher on Jan. 1, 1837 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Haycock Twp., Bucks Co.

They had eight children: John Hugh in 1839, Samuel in 1841, Elizabeth about 1843, Mary in 1846, Amos in 1848, Laurance in 1849, Emaline (Emma) in 1850 and Tobias about 1853.

Francis was a boat builder and a carpenter. He lived in Tinicum Twp., Bucks Co. until he took his family to Washington Twp., Berks Co. about 1852.

Thanks so much to Mike O. for so graciously finding, photographing and uploading the gravestone photo.

And thanks to Joseph for sharing the plot information. His help is much appreciated.
