Jones "Coon" Roberts was a life-long resident of Rockingham County, NC. He was a lieutenant in the 45th NC Infantry, CSA, during the Civil War. He was captured at Gettysburg and spent the remainder of the war in a Union prison camp on an island in the Illinois River. After his release at the end of the war, he walked home to North Carolina. After the war, he farmed as did most people in the area during that period. During the 1870's, he served as postmaster of Stoneville for a brief period. He married in 1868 (1) Virginia Elizabeth (Jennie) Grogan, who died in 1891. They had 7 children, two of whom moved to California. The other five all lived and died in NC and are connected on Findagrave. He married (2) Nancy Jane Fagg on November 2, 1892. He died on December 5, 1895.
