Son of William Ensley Howard, Sr. and Millie Jane Barnhill Howard of the Blount-Loudon county areas of Tennessee, James was born in Unitia while it was still a part of Roane County.

James married Martha Jane Shanks on June 03, 1874 in Loudon County, Tennessee. James father learned the trade of blacksmithing from his father, then passed it on to his sons Frank and Roscoe. The three operated the Howard and Sons Blacksmith shop at 212 Jefferson Street, Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas.

James and Martha had 9 children, the following are known:

Cora Mae Howard Marshall, 1879-1953
Ozro Alexander Howard, 1881-1962
Maude Orlena Howard Trone, 1885-1967

Another possible child of this couple was Jasper Lafayette Brickell Howard, 1875-1876 who is buried in the Unitia Cemetery, Unitia, Loudon County, Tennessee.

After Martha's death James married a second time to Caledona "Dona" Hackney on 16 Jun 1907 in Friendsville, Tennessee.

James was a member of the I.O.O.F., both in Tennessee and Texas, and was an active member of the Methodist Church in both states.

"Last Rites For James A. Howard Are Solemnized"

"Funeral services for James A. Howard, 82, who died at his home here Wednesday morning at 8:20 O'clock following a two weeks' illness, were to have been held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the First Methodist Church with the Rev. E. Rosemond Stanford, pastor, officiating. Burial was to follow in Waxahachie City Cemetery with the local I.O.O.F. Lodge in charge of services at the grave.

Active pallbearers were named as grandsons.

Mr. Howard, who would have been 83 years of age next month, was born in Unitia, Tenn., located 18 miles from Knoxville. He was married there about 63 years ago to Miss Mattie Shanks. They moved to Waxahachie in 1899 and Mrs. Howard died here on Feb. 14, 1907 and was buried here. Later, Mr. Howard was married to Miss Dona Hackney in Friendsville, Tenn., who survives.

Mr. Howard had been in the blacksmith business for the past 62 years and had been associated in the business with his son, Roscoe, here for the past thirty years. He had been a member of the Methodist Church for the past seventy years and a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge for 48 years.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. J. A. Howard, Waxahachie; six children, Frank, Roscoe H. and Mrs. Will Trone, all of Waxahachie; Ozro A., Lawton, Okla., Mrs. W. M. Marshall, Jourdonton; and Mrs. Forrest Gumm, Harlingen; a brother, Sid R. Howard, Harlingen; four sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Williams, Mrs. Evy Williams, Mrs. Hester Webb, all of Trion, Ga., and Mrs. A. T. Moody, Bentonville, Ark.; 30 grandchildren 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild."
