John R Nicodemus moved, with his parents, to Indiana in 1840. He united with the M.E. church in 1856 and married in 1860 in Henry Co, IN. In October, 1861 he enlisted in the Union army, with Co F 57th Reg, Ind. Vol. Inf. and left his wife and child to serve his country. By Dec of 1861 his wife and infant child had died back home in Henry Co. After the battle of Shilo, he contracted inflammatory rheumatism necessitating his discharge in 1863. By 20 Aug 1863 he married his 2nd wife in Fort Wayne, Allen Co, Indiana. However, he reenlisted Oct 29, 1863 with the 142nd Ind Vol. Infantry, Co. E serving to the end of the war as sergeant. He held two honorable discharges and a non-commission certificate. In 1864 he became an ordained preacher ministering until 1893 when his impaired health curtailed him.
