This was my great-grandfather. His given name was spelled differently in many places, and for many years (we thoutht) he had no middle name, but I found him after a long search and a photo from a cousin with his full name, John Wiley Bunn, written many years ago, by an aunt whose handwriting I recognized.
He fought in the Civil War but no one is alive today to tell me from which state or which side. His father was "too old" to fight but he sold corn, horses, etc. to the Confederate Army.
I first found him in the 1850 census, living in Franklin county, Alabama, with an older sister, Mrs. Nancy Thomas and her husband, John. Also with them was another sister, Catherine. Have not found him in the 1870 census but found marriage record in 1872 in Mississippi.
The next census was 1880 in Arkansas with his wife, Lizzie, and their two oldest daughters, Mary L. and Alice Mae, both born in Mississippi, and two sons, Charles Leander and John Wylie, both born in Texas. There were two more daughters, Annie and Launa; and another son, Martin Luther, all born in Texas. Alice had a twin brother, who lived only a few days. The seven remaining children lived to adulthood and gave him many grandchildren.
His death certificate states cause of death was Bright's Disease (a form of kidney disease). Some kind of Kidney disease has taken a number of others in the family.
