SILAS CARPENTER, 84, DIES AT C'VILLE HOME.

Silas Benjamin Carpenter, 84, of Crothersville, a resident of Jackson county for many years and a retired Pennsylvania Railroad employe, died Wednesday night at his home, 102 North Preston Street. Death followed a lingering illness. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Crothersville Christian Church with the Rev. George Secrist, pastor, in charge. Burial in Crothersville Cemetery. Friends may call at the Carpenter home after 6 o'clock Friday night.


Mr. Carpenter was born September 13, 1871, in Jennings County, the son of the late John and Rebecca Baker Carpenter. He spent most of his life in Jackson County where he was married January 14, 1893 to Catherine A. Smith, who survives. For many years he was employed as a section man for the Pennsylvania Railroad and also served as a mail carrier for the railroad, delivering mail from the train to the post office. A member of the Crothersville Christian Church, Mr. Carpenter was well known throughout the Crothersville community and was held in high esteem by a host of friends and acquaintances who mourn his death.


Besides the widow he is survived by four children, Jesse Carpenter, of Greenwood, Alfred Carpenter, of Indianapolis, Mrs. Laura Mae Parker, of Crothersville, and Mrs. Ora Bryant, of Indianapolis; and three sisters, Mrs. Alma Overman, of Indianapolis, Mrs. Mae Peters, of Crothersville, and Mrs. Mattie Keith, of Indianapolis. Eight grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and one great, great, grandchild also survive, A daughter, Mrs. Maggie Huls, and a brother preceded him in death.
