Astronaut. He was a Syrian astronaut. He held the honor of being the first Syrian and the second Arab in space. He was a pilot in the Syrian Air Force who specialized in navigation. In September 1985, he was selected to take part in the Intercosmos spaceflight program. He took part in the Soyuz TM-3 to the Mir space station flight, spending 7 days, 23 hours, and 5 minutes in space. For his service, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 30 July 1987; he was also awarded the Order of Lenin. He was admitted to the private Sanko Hospital in the Turkish where he passed away at the age of 72.
