Clausen Cooper Peden of Marks, 82, a lifelong native of Quitman County, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, in Marks.

Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, at the Marks United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Simmons and Dr. Laurie Jones officiating. Burial was in Belen Cemetery with Kimbro Funeral Home of Marks in charge of arrangements.

Born September 2, 1923, to Clausen and Virginia Cooper Peden in Belen, he graduated from Marks High School and attended Mississippi State University. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. While stationed in London, England, he met and married Dorothy Eileen Lee.

Following his discharge from the U. S. Army at the end of World War II, Mr. Peden returned to Quitman County and established the Belen Mercantile Company in 1946. He continued to operate Belen Mercantile and served as U. S. Postmaster for the Belen community until his death. He was an Eagle Scout and remained active with the Boy Scouts of America, was president of the Belen Cemetery Association, and was a member of the Marks Rotary Club. Mr. Peden was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous where he received his 30-year sobriety medal in January of this year. He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael Douglas Peden and Lewis Perry Peden.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Marks; two daughters, Beverley Neale of Memphis and her husband, Charles, and Mary Catherine Brasher of Oakland and her husband, Paul; four grandchildren, Patricia Southcomb of Arlington, TX, Paul Brasher, Jr. of Batesville, Cory Peden of Helena, MT, and Alex Neale of Memphis; and six great-grandchildren.

The family has requested that memorials be made to Marks United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 157, Marks, MS 38646.
