Maxey Irby "Irby" Abernathy, 92, of Hampstead died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster. Born Dec. 21, 1915, in Blackstone, Va., he was the son of the late William Maxey Abernathy and Betty Jane Hudson Abernathy. He was the husband of Hilda Latleif Abernathy, his wife of 68 years. He had been a foreman for Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. and was a member of the Palestine Lodge No. 189 AF & AM of Catonsville. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons and daughters-in-law Donald and Betty Abernathy, and Larry and Denise Abernathy, all of Hampstead; a sister, Pauline Bishop of Blackstone, Va.; granddaughter and husband Debbie Abernathy Fiackos and Greg Fiackos of Hampstead; and great-grandchildren Emily and Andrew. A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday at St. George's Episcopal Church, 2434 Cape Horn Road, Hampstead, with the Rev. Chris Tang officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville. Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.elinefh.com.
