Dan was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and graduated from Baton Rouge High School and the U. S. Naval Academy, Class of 1952. He was an active and reserve Naval Officer for 37 years. His active naval service included a combat tour as Chief Engineer on the destroyer USS James E. Kyes in Korea. A later assignment brought him to Ohio as Commanding Officer of the fleet oiler, USS Pawcatuck, which underwent modernization and overhaul at American Ship Building in Lorain, Ohio. Pawcatuck was one of the largest naval ships to transit the St. Lawrence Seaway. Dan retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of Captain.
