Herbert E. Landon enlisted July 15, 1862, at age 19, as a Sergeant in Company B, 16th Connecticut Infantry. On Jan. 13, 1863, he was promoted to Sergeant Major and transferred to Company S. On Dec. 6, 1863, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company D. He was captured Apr. 20, 1864, in Plymouth, North Carolina and imprisoned at Columbia, South Carolina. Escaped Feb. 15, 1865, with Capt. Mark Turner of Company D, and Capt. Morse of Company E (see the obituary of Mark Turner, Hartford Courant, March 5, 1902, p.3). He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant, June 15, 1865, and mustered out June 24, 1865. He applied for a pension in 1889 (Certificate No. 486,951).

Herbert married Mrs. Delia Phelps (née Richardson) on Jan. 12, 1870, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the 1880 census they were operating a boarding house in Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. They had no children. Delia died in 1904 in Connecticut. Within the next few years, Herbert relocated to Santa Clara County, Calif., where he married Alice Louise Humphrey on March 4, 1909.

San Jose Evening News, Mar. 6, 1928, p.3. "Herbert E. Landon.—Private funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. today for Herbert Edward Landon from the family residence, 230 South Tenth Street. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Landon was the husband of Mrs. Alice H. Landon and the brother of Houston Landon of Old Saybrook, Conn. He was a native of Guilford, Conn."

Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery per funeral home records of San Jose undertaker Amos O. Williams (available on Familysearch.org). His burial location is from the SUVCW database ("Hubert" E. Landon), Sec. P, Block 85, Lot 2. This is his second wife Alice Humphrey's family plot.
