Childress native Roma Stephenson Jones Marshall, 91, of Amarillo, Texas, left this earthly life on Saturday, November 18, 2023, to join her God, Jesus Christ, her beloved parents, and her other departed loved ones. Roma's cousin, Rob Hicks of Childress, will officiate the service that will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 24, 2023, at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Childress Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Roma had been a resident of Childress and Cee Vee, Texas, for most of her life before moving to Amarillo in 2007.

Roma was born to R.L. "Bob" and Lucille Kennedy Stephenson on January 9, 1932, in Childress County. She was an only child and devoted daughter. Roma had many cousins who were good friends, but her closest cousin was Charlene Kennedy Eakin, who lived in Childress during her early years. Charlene was like a sister to Roma, and the two remained in close contact until Charlene passed away in 2016.
Bob, Lucille, and Roma were a young farming family during the Great Depression and had to move to California for work. Right before World War II, the family moved back to Texas.

They lived in various locations around Childress, and Roma attended River Camp School, among others. She loved growing up in the country and had a windmill engraved on her grave marker.

Roma was a fine student at Childress High School and excelled in journalism. She was a co-editor of the school newspaper and was selected to attend the Panhandle Pen Women's Conference in Amarillo. Roma wanted to attend college but was unable to do so for financial reasons.

Soon after graduating in 1949 at age 17, Roma went to work at Calvin Jones Grocery in Childress. She married the boss' son, J.C. Jr., in 1950. Roma went to work with J.C. at the store he had built in southeast Childress, Jones Food Market. The marriage produced three children, Cheryl, Jana, and Robert.
Roma worked alongside J.C. at the store and also cared for the children, with the help of the children's beloved "Mama," Lucille. Unfortunately, J.C. died suddenly in 1960 of a heart attack at the age of 41, leaving Roma with three small children to care for and a store to operate. She rented the store to others and stayed home to care for the children.

In 1965, Roma married Bryce Marshall, a widowed farmer from Cee Vee. Their only child, Toni, was born in 1967. Again, Roma worked with her husband, this time by keeping books at the Cee Vee cotton gin while Bryce was the manager. Bryce and Roma moved to Childress in 1971.

Roma supported Cheryl and Jana by being a leader of their Blue Bird and Camp Fire Girls groups and supported Robert by being a den mother for his Cub Scout Troop. Girls in these groups earned beads by mastering skills, and the beads were sewn onto vests. Roma was a fine seamstress and made especially fancy vests for her girls. Roma also made her daughters many dresses, including formal gowns for special occasions. She also thrilled them by making doll clothes. Roma taught Toni how to sew doll clothes, and she made school clothes for Toni. When she could, Roma attended her children's activities, such as band concerts and sports.

Roma wanted her children to have opportunities that she didn't have, and Cheryl and Jana took lessons in piano, art, and twirling. Toni took ballet and piano lessons, and she became a fine pianist who participated in Guild competitions.

Ten years younger than her youngest sibling, Toni became especially close to her mother. Toni has fond memories of singing with Roma on road trips. Toni was in the CHS band, and Roma would drive to the gate at halftime just to see Toni march.

Unfortunately, Roma was widowed again when Bryce passed away in 1988 from a heart condition.
Roma took care of her parents throughout her adult life, and she spent some of her later years working as a professional caregiver. Because she was known to be conscientious, honest, and easy to get along with, Roma was in great demand. After one client passed away, Roma had more than a dozen job offers.
Roma was a lifelong devout Christian and raised her children in Central Christian Church while they lived in Childress. She also served as director of Vacation Bible School there. Roma got on her knees at her bedside every night and prayed until she became physically unable to do so. She was a member of the women's Circle group at the Central Christian Church for decades. While living at Cee Vee, the family attended the First Baptist Church there.

Roma was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Lucille Stephenson of Childress; her husbands, J.C. Jones, Jr., and Bryce Marshall, both of Childress; her sons-in-law, Jim Wakefield of Shamrock, Texas, and Brian Pearson of Amarillo; granddaughter, Jillian Jones of Amarillo; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Survivors include Roma's children, Cheryl Wakefield of Shamrock; and Jana Comerford, Robert Jones and wife Childress native Lisa Prescott Jones; and Toni Marshall Ingalls and partner Mark Spielbauer, all of Amarillo; grandchildren, Matt Wakefield and wife Monique of McKinney, Texas; Jennifer Jones Booth and husband Shane of Memphis, Texas; Jaclyn Jones Daniel and husband Bryan of Childress; Brandy Crutchfield and husband Shannon of Lubbock, Texas; great-grandchildren, Mason Wakefield of McKinney; Aubrey Worthington of Lubbock; Bryson and Brooklynn Barrett of Memphis; Jaci Daniel of Wichita Falls, Texas; Jacob Daniel of Childress; and Deon, Haylee, Jay, and Luke Crutchfield of Lubbock.
Burial will be in Childress Cemetery.
