Edgar Glynn Abel, 94, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Lafayette General Medical Center. Edgar Glynn, born June 29, 1913 in Carroll County, MS to the late Edgar Nathaniel Abel of Grenada, MS and the former Helen Lott of Carroll County, MS, was a resident of Lafayette.
While in college, he was in the USL Hall of Fame, Vice President of the Student Body, and President of the Blue Key National Honorary Fraternity. He also lettered in track, football, baseball, and was Little All American Half Back and received an honorable mention for All American by Grantland Rice. He graduated from USL with a B.S. Degree. From 1939 to 1942, he was Assistant Dean of Men at USL.
He served as an Officer in U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was the Commanding Officer of a Mine Sweeper in the Gulf of Mexico and Executive Officer of a Mine Sweeper in the South Pacific Ocean. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve for 31 years.
Following his service to our country and his discharge from active duty in 1945, he attended Stanford University earning an M.A. degree in Educational Administration. Following his graduation from Stanford in 1946 until 1969, he was Dean of Men at USL. He was the Manager of the Lafayette Municipal Auditorium (City of Lafayette) from 1969 to 1972 and then became the Director of Community Affairs with responsibility for: The Recreation and Parks Department, The Municipal Auditorium, The Animal Shelter, The Natural History Planetarium and Museum, as well as The Tourist Center.
Some of Mr. Abel's past community activities include being past Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Surface Division. He was also a member of the Beavers Club, which meets weekly and raises funds annually for the community; was a member of the Retired Teachers and the Retired Military group, which meets monthly and was a 1983 recipient of the Civic Cup Award of Lafayette and a past coordinator of The Lafayette Centennial Celebration.
Survivors include his sister, Freda Abel Harper; son, Daniel Glynn Abel of New Orleans, La; two grandchildren, Shane M. Gates, and Christine E. Hymel, both of New Orleans, LA; and one great-grandson, Grafton Gabriel Gates of New Orleans, LA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Leah Jane Egan.
