William Robert Cochran

William Robert Cochran, 101, of Atchison, KS, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Atchison Senior Village Nursing Center, in Atchison, KS.

William was born June 10, 1906, in Pike County, IL, the son of Charles and Margaret Henthorn Cochran. He attended schools in Liberty, IL, graduating from Liberty High School.

He and the former Lillian Joseph were united in marriage on Feb. 15, 1935, in Liberty, MO.

William began his employment with the Union News Company as cafeteria manager at the old Municipal Airport in Kansas City, MO, where he became the first food service operator to provide meals to United Airlines flights.

He came to Atchison in 1936 as operator of the café at the Atchison Depot, and among his responsibilities served the troop trains as they passed through Atchison. In 1942 he purchased the Victory Café at the corner of Third and Main streets, operating the establishment until the flood of 1957 which destroyed most downtown Atchison businesses. Following the 1963 urban renewal project, he moved farther west on Main Street, where he owned and operated Suzy Q's Restaurant for a few years, later managing the former LaMall Cafeteria until the late 1970s.

Following his retirement he continued working for several years for the Grippin Moving and Storage Company and later did numerous odd jobs keeping himself active and continued working until he was 98 years old.

He was a lifelong member of the Methodist faith.

An avid basketball fan, William attended all NAIA Tournaments in Kansas City, MO beginning in 1939 until the tournaments were moved from Kansas City.

Survivors include his wife; Lillian Cochran, Atchison, four daughters; Joyce (Jack) Wininger, Denver, CO, Mary (John) VanDyke, Atchison, Linda (Mike) VanDyke, Topeka, KS, Judy (Richard) Green, Atchison, a son; Donald Cochran, Kirkland, WA, twenty-nine grandchildren, fifty-one great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Rev. Eduardo Bousson officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Atchison Hospice or Atchison Humane Society and may be left in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.arensbergpruett.com.

William Cochran and 1st wife, Isabell Editha Dearwester, married 1926 in Palmyra, MO, had one child, Mona Cochran Cantrell. Isabell died soon after childbirth at age 16.
