John Cooper Dunn was the son of William Dunn and Ann Cooper. They came to America from Northern Ireland when John was a baby arriving in Charleston, SC aboard the ship "The Jane". They resided in Chester County, South Carolina for a few years where their cousin George Hayes lived but they decided to join George Hayes and many others who had relocated to the newly opened areas of Alabama. They settled near Boligee in Greene County, Alabama about 1825.

John Cooper Dunn married Elizabeth Ann Kennedy Hutchins on April 6, 1852 in Greene County, Alabama. They made their home in Lauderdale Co., Mississippi and their seven children were born there.

He built what was called Dunns Falls and operated a mill. The mill house he built is still standing and the property is now a state park and recreational area.

Per his obituary, he and Elizabeth resided with their daughter Susie Dunn Buckley in Forest, Mississippi for five years prior to his death in 1904.

Note: While his place of birth is shown as Belfast, Ireland on his headstone inscription, it is known from other sources his family did not live in Belfast. They lived about 25 miles west of Belfast (in County Derry) in the Londonderry and Castledawson area.
