Frances M. Bostrom, Lakin, died in Topeka August 7, 2016, with her daughter, Sheryl L. Vincent, and niece, Zanitta G. Kisner, by her side. She was born July 7, 1923, in Wright, Kansas, the daughter of Mary Belle Kisner and Raymond Simmons, and graduated from Offerle High School in 1941.
Frances married Lennus Bostrom on August 7, 1943, in Amarillo, Texas, and ironically passed on the 73rd anniversary of their wedding. The Bostroms had one daughter, Sheryl. They moved to Lakin in 1950, where Frances and Lennus owned and operated Lakin Motor Company, a Ford dealership, for 38 years. During that period, they opened their home to Frances' two brothers, John and Gaylord Kisner, making sure the brothers graduated from Lakin High School. Frances also worked in the Lakin Style Shop, Kelley's Grocery Store, Lakin Lumber Company, BC Nash Insurance and the Kearny County Extension Office, retiring there in 2000. Upon her retirement, she received special recognition at Kansas State University for her 35 years of service at the Extension Office. During her tenure with the Extension Office, she was very involved with the 4H Clubs and the Kearny County Fair, serving as secretary of the fair for 35 years.
Community service was a very important part of Frances' life. Her first love was the Lakin Booster Club, which she led for 50-plus years and remained active until her passing. Her favorite activities were the Annual Christmas events and the Annual Easter egg hunt. Among her community service activities, Frances was a Lakin Ambassador and was chair of the 1973 Lakin Centennial celebration. She served as a member of the City Council for 11 years.
Frances was very active in the First Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and served as treasurer for 50 years. She served as a Sunday school teacher until the age of 90. Throughout many years, she helped with church dinners and with the mailing of the monthly "Church Chat Flyer."
Dedicated to her family and community, she will be truly missed for her enthusiasm and inspiration, especially for her devotion to Lakin young people.
Frances was predeceased by her husband, Lennus; son-in-law, William R. Vincent; sister, Blanche Sanko; brothers, Melvin Simmons, John Kisner and Gaylord Kisner; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Simmons; and brother-in-law, Bob Sanko. Besides Sheryl, she is survived by sisters-in-law, Eve Kisner, Kingman, Arizona, and Willadean Kisner, Dodge City, Kansas, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Frances' memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Presbyterian Church in Lakin. Burial will immediately follow at the Lakin Cemetery.
