Bessie had a larger-than-life personality, and although many loved her, she was affectionately called Madear (muh-dear) by those who knew and loved her most. When one of her children or other close relatives got out of line, one of her favorite sayings was, "You way out your place!" Then she would put you back in your place and do it with love.
On December 10, 1979, Bessie Godfrey-Baker married the love of her life, Mr. Burney Baker, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son, Gregory L. Godfrey; her sisters, Maxine Solomon, and Loretha Bush; and her great-grandson, Rodriquez Campbell. Bessie departed her earthly life on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, to join her loved ones in Heaven.
