James Charles Shelton was born in Rowena, Texas on Feb. 21, 1913. He died on Oct. 11, 1957 in Montalvo, CA.He was buried in Santa Clara Cemetery on Oct. 14, 1957.

Jim was the son of Dr. John Dudley Shelton (1853-1923), a physcian, and Celesta Josephine Beach Shelton (1872-1957). In addition to Jim, the couple had seven other children of their own —John Herbert, Elmer Bryan, Thomas Herman, Raymond Doniphan, Lucille Shelton Hinkle, Erline Shelton Kubala and Mary Shelton Free.

They also raised four children from John's two prior marriages to Ella Gleason and Evelyn or Ella Dunn (Nannie, Norman, Albert and Harry Shelton) and two children (Leslie and Purl T. Pittman) from Celesta's prior marriage to Robert Pittman.

Jim was raised in Texas. He was 10 years old when his father died in 1923. He and his sister Mary lived with their mother in Kileen, Texas in 1930. It appears that Jim moved to Los Angeles, CA between 1930 and 1935.

After he came to Los Angeles, Jim met Mary Aragon who had moved from Colorado to Los Angeles. The couple married on Feb. 27, 1937 in Los Angeles. On Feb. 5, 1938, Jim and Mary welcomed their first son, James Charles Shelton II. On Dec. 13, 1939, Jim and Mary's second son, David Laurence Shelton, was born in Los Angeles County.

In the 1940s, the family moved to Oxnard, CA where Jim was a truck driver, freight hauler and furniture mover. Two companies he worked for where Pioneer Truck and Storage and Davis Mayflower Van Lines, where he met his good friend Red Coberly.

Tragedy struck the family on Oct. 11, 1957 when Jim, a very experienced, veteran truck driver, was killed in a freak trucking accident in Montecito, CA.

According to the Ventura Star-Free Press Jim was killed, "when he was apparently run over by a loaded sand truck he had been driving…He was hauling sand from Montalvo to an estate on Mountain drive, between Santa Barbara and Montecito, when the accident occurred.

"The body was found in the roadway at 1:15 p.m. by a resident of the area. The truck had continued 300 feet east of the body and was in a clump of brush and trees, its engine still running."

In 1985, Jim and Mary's son, Jim, aged 47, died in San Diego, CA.

Mary passed away on Aug. 16, 2001 in Culver City, CA. She is buried next to Jim in Santa Clara Cemetery, Oxnard.
