Jerry T. Mahoney, 49 passed away Thursday December 27, 2007. Born in Plainfield, he was resided in Piscataway all of his life.

He was a graduate of Piscataway High School and a graduate of the University of Kansas where he received a full four year football scholarship.

Jerry Mahoney was hired as a police officer March of 1981. After attending Middlesex County Police Academy, he was assigned to patrol division as a patrolman. In 1986 he was assigned to the detective division where he worked in several sections to include Juvenile Section, General Investigation and Narcotics. While assigned to the Narcotics Division he was transferred to the Middlesex County Narcotics Task Force where he made several under cover buys resulting in search warrants and arrests.

Jerry Mahoney was one of the founders of the D.A.R.E. program in our town and was a D.A.R.E. Officer from 1991 to 1997. He was a public relations officer from 1992 to 1994 and he served as Acting Sergeant from June 1, 1998 to December 31, 1998.

At the time of his death, Officer Mahoney had 26 years experience. He was a member of the Board of Directors of D.A.R.E. New Jersey and was also a member of the Piscataway Township Board of Education, where he was not only Vice President but he was the longest serving member on the board. Jerry was a member of the Civil Rights Advisory Committee.

Some of the highlights of Officer Mahoney's career were; he was recognized by the Superior Court of New Jersey as an expert witness on drug activity in Piscataway Township. He received numerous letters of commendation from teachers and administrators of the Piscataway School district, the Department of Motor Vehicle and various community and medical groups. He was acknowledged by Piscataway Educational Foundation as the first inductee to the Piscataway High School "Wall of Fame", identified as a distinguished graduate of Piscataway High School through initiation of a scholarship entitled "The Jerry T. Mahoney Make a Difference Award" and backed by proclamation by Mayor Helen Merolla marking June 10, 1997 as "Jerry Mahoney Day" in Piscataway Township.

He was recognized by D.A.R.E. New Jersey, Inc., as "D.A.R.E. Administrator of the Year" in 1997. As a D.A.R.E. Officer he graduated more than 4, 000 D.A.R.E. students and was responsible for the D.A.R.E. Municipal Alliance Picnic.

Officer Jerry T. Mahoney will be sorely missed by all.

Surviving are his parents Nelson and Annie Mahoney; his son John N. Mahoney; his sister Valerie M. Scott and her husband Jesse L. Scott.; his niece and godchild Jessica; his nephew Jordan; his companion Sara P. Turcios of Piscataway; his best friend Billy Giaimo of Allentown, NJ and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
