For many years, Lex was a school teacher, coach, and principal in Northeast Mississippi. Then, he became Chief Deputy Sheriff for Lee County (Tupelo). He spent one term as Sheriff. After that, he joined the U.S. Marshal Service as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, in Aberdeen, Oxford, and Clarksdale.
In the early 1950's, Lex ran unsuccessfully for Northern District Public Service Commissioner, then joined that agency, where he served as Executive Secretary of the Commission in Jackson, then a field representative for the Northern District.
He married Jewel Haralson in 1939, and they had two sons, Richard D. White (Dick) and William D. White (Bill).
