Death Claims One of County's Early Settlers
Funeral services for Mrs. George F. Tomlinson, a pioneer of Swisher County, were conducted Friday afternoon, Aug. 7 at 4 o'clock at the First Baptist Church in Tulia with Dr. W. H. Clark officiating. He was assisted by Rev. J. A. Lindley of Tulia and Rev. Jimmy Aiken of Hereford.
Pallbearers were her grandsons: Howard and C. W. Tomlinson of Amarillo; Cecil, Grady and Harold Rousser of Kress; Ralph Hastings, Hereford; Ray Tomlinson, Tulia; and George Crain, Altus, Okla.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery beside the grave of her husband, who prededed her in death ten years. Funeral arrangementes were under the direction of Wallace Funeral Home.
Survivors include four children: G. A. Tomlinson, Amarillo; Sam Tomlinson, Borger; Jim Tomlinson, Tulia; and Mrs. Ina Hastings, Hereford; two step-daughters, whom she reared from childhood Mrs. Maggie Crain, Altus, Okla and Mrs. Beulah Rousser, Clinton, Okla.; 19 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. All of her children were present for the funeral.
Mrs. Tomlinson, 86, passed away August 6 at 6:25 a. m. at the home of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Tomlinson, nine miles west of Tulia. She had been in failing health for the past two years.
Born Sept. 2, 1855, in Jonesboro, Tenn., Sarah Margaret Lane later moved with her family to Texas, where she married George F. Tomlinson on Oct. 12, 1884 in Bell County. The couple moved to Swisher County in 1890, the year the county was founded coming here in a covered wagon. They settled one-eighth mile west of Tulia and their home was a stopping place for freighters. Mrs. Tomlinson never knew whether she would have one or twenty people for a meal.
Mrs. Tomlinson joined the Baptist Church when she was quite young, and she and her husband were charter members of the Tulia Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star."
