Nelda Reed Vernon Watkins, age 90, of Amarillo, passed away April 15, 2016.

Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 18, 2016 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Senior Pastor Steve Stephens and Rev. John McLaine officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia Amarillo, Texas 79110.

Nelda was born February 2, 1926 in Amarillo, to G.B. and Wanda Wilbanks Reed. She graduated from Amarillo High School, and continued her education at Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing, and Amarillo College where she received her degree in nursing. Nelda started her career as a registered nurse at Northwest Texas Hospital. After High Plains Baptist Hospital opened in 1968, Nelda, along with her co-workers established the Bivins Rehabilitation Center where she was head nurse. She married Jack Vernon 1949; he preceded her in death on June 3, 2003. Nelda married Clayton Watkins in 2004, in Groom..

She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church; a charter member of Wadley Leukemia Association; Christian Workers Sunday School Class; and Professional Nursing Organizations.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Reed Vernon; her parents; a sister, Jean Reed Somsen; mother and father in law, E.M., and Grace Vernon; brothers in law, Earnest Martin, Sonny Vernon, J. Allen Ritter and A.L. Rogers.

Nelda is survived by her husband Clayton; a daughter, Holly Bentley and husband Kenney; two sons, Barry Vernon and wife Jennifer and John Vernon and wife Lisa; six grandchildren, Brigitte Artho and husband Brad, Bo Vernon, Jake Vernon, James Bentley, Annie Shannon and husband John David and Kate Vernon all of Amarillo; a great-grandson, Bentley Don Artho; her twin sister, Nell Rogers of Austin; sister in law, Mary Louise “Sis” Ritter; brother in law, Gary Somsen of Bonita Springs, Florida; several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request to donate to St. Paul Methodist Church – 4317 I-40 Frontage Rd, Amarillo, Texas 79106 or Faith City Mission – 401 S.E. 2nd Avenue, Amarillo, Texas 79101.
