He trained as a Blacksmith. He married and supposedly came out to NZ from Gloucestershire on the Mermaid with his wife in Dec 1861. The Mermaid docked in Auckland on 16 Dec 1861 . Records show The Mermaid did not come to Lyttleton (twice) until late Jan/ early Feb 1862 then again later in the year.
The Mermaid also arrived earlier on 19 Oct 1859 in Auckland of 1326 tons Captain White Page 223 in White Wings.
It was a small vessel of 1233 tons but also a fast vessel commanded by Captain Rose. John Thorne is said to have walked over the Port Hills in 1861. He worked in Laurie & Gannons timber yard in Ferry Rd with Milson George Jones and then he bought land in Downs Road, Killinchy.
