EDEN - Walter G. Atkinson, Jr. (Major, U.S. Army, retired), 85, of 220 Country Club Drive, died on Thursday, May 17, 2007, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at First Baptist Church of Eden, 533 Greenwood Street. Interment will be at Ridge-View Cemetery.

Major Atkinson enlisted in the Army in 1939 and retired in 1960 from the 81st Chemical Group. During World War II, he participated in the invasion of Utah Beach on D-Day and saw combat in the European Theater. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for heroism in battle. Additionally, he fought in the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with four Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, and the National Defense Service Medal. After his retirement from the military, he was employed by Stoneville Furniture Company as vice-president of manufacturing.

Mr. Atkinson was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for 45 years, serving for 20 years on the Board of Ushers. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Boys Club. Walter was an avid golf fan and player, winning the Officers' Club Championship in his younger years. His interests included gardening, especially his tomatoes, and baking bread and cakes to deliver to friends. His greatest pleasure was his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Nadine Tilley Atkinson; his daughter, Jan Lewis; and son-in-law, John; his son, Steven; and daughter-in-law, Alicia; grandson, Robert Glenn Ogburn, Ill.; granddaughter, Kathryn Nadine Atkinson; and several nieces and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his son, Walter G. (Tripp) Atkinson, Ill; his parents, Walter and Nannie Martin Atkinson; three sisters, Gladys Matthews, Mildred Archibald, and Kathleen Mills; and one brother, William Lloyd Atkinson.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

The family is grateful to Dr. Kevin Howard for his compassionate care and to the ICCU staff of Morehead Memorial Hospital.
