ABINGDON - Cedric E. Dowell, 70, of rural Abingdon died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

Born April 5, 1930, in Hermon to Walter E. and Ella M. Rice Dowell, he married Peggy Joan Reathaford Nov 19 1954 in Galesburg. He later married Margery N. Anderson on Nov. 14, 1964, in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Wayne (and Debbie) of Abingdon and Lyle of Chicago; two daughters, Carol Dowell of Rockford and Cristy (and Bobby) Caruthers of Richmond, Texas; three grandchildren; four brothers, George of Knoxville, Leslie of Buffalo, N.Y., Wendell of Front Royal, Va., and Denzil of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and one sister, Lois Coupland of Abingdon.

He served in the Army National Guard during the Korean War and was a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post 381.

He worked at Briggs Manufacturing Co. for 47 years.

He was of the Methodist faith.

A private family memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Cremation will be accorded, and burial of ashes will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
