John Dooley Martin was born in Winfield, Kansas on September 30, 1942. He shook off the frailties of this world and went home to Heaven on June 7, 2022 from Fort Dodge, Kansas.
John was the son of John Byron Martin and Eva Ruth Dooley. He was born not long before his father, known as Byron, went to serve in the US Navy during World War II. Byron returned from his service after the war and gave "Johnny" a baby sister, Bennie Ruth, in 1946. Sadly, Byron was killed in a refinery accident in 1947, leaving Eva Ruth, John, and Bennie much too soon. Fortunately, John's grandparents and extended family were very close knit. They were there to help with the nurturing of John and Bennie and left a loving and lasting impact on their lives.
A lifelong Kansas resident, he graduated from Augusta High School and joined the Army National Guard. After Basic Training at Fort Leonardwood, he returned to Kansas and served 23 years with the units in Augusta, Dodge City and Garden City. He retired with the rank of 1st Sergeant.
John grew up tinkering on cars. He became a Ford mechanic and worked at Ford dealerships. He had a knack for it and people would call him from all over the state to help diagnose issues for repairs.
John married first to Sharon Neufeld. They had 3 daughters: Kimberly, Connie, and Lisa. John and Sharon divorced in 1981. John married second to Patty Henson (nee Randall) and became a stepfather to her 2 young daughters, Lorna and Debbie. They were married almost 39 years before Patty passed away in 2021.
John spent many years working in the pits on dirt track sprint cars for Evart "Pappy" Isaac's 6 & 8 Speed Shop in Dodge City, Kansas. This allowed him to travel all over the Midwest.
In addition to his love for fast cars, John enjoyed fishing, telling tall tales, riding motorcycles, reading western novels, and the Kansas City Chiefs. He loved babies and they loved him right back. He seemed to have a magic touch to calm a crying baby. He took in stray dogs, even when he said he didn't want any more dogs, because they just needed someone. He was allergic to cats and said he didn't like them, but he sure kept feeding the mama and baby cat that showed up at his house.
John was preceded in death by his parents and sister, his grandparents, Joseph and Latillie Martin and Clinton and Mabel Dooley. He is also preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Lorna Henson and a greatgranddaughter, Lejand.
John is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Converse and her husband, Dan; Connie McGee and her husband, Lance; Lisa Towns and her husband, John; and Debbie Henson; along with 12 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.
John will be cremated and inurnment with military honors will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta, Kansas at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Fort Dodge Soldiers Home.
