Caroline 'Carrie' Baker
Caroline "Carrie" Margaret Mathis Baker went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, April 10, 2007.
She was a daughter of the late Lewis and Margaret "Maggie" Holladay Mathis of Manning, S.C.
Carrie was born in Woodrow, S.C., later moving as a small child to Rose Hill Plantation before the family moved to Wedgefield, S.C., where she finished her formal education from the "Girls' High School" in Sumter, S.C.
Mrs. Baker was the widow of James C. Baker Sr. Also preceding her in death were a two-year old daughter, Joyce Ann of Sumter, S.C.; a son, James C. "Sonny" Baker Jr. of Salisbury, N.C; and a granddaughter, Karen Janice Payne-Richburg of Hardeeville, S.C.; four brothers, Richard Mathis, Ridgeland, S.C., Lewis Herbert Mathis, Manning, S.C., Jackson and Stephen Mathis of Wedgefield, S.C.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Etta Baker Payne (Rev. Dr. Kenneth Payne) of Monroe, with whom she made her home; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Altman of Red Bluff and Anderson, S.C., Mary Lee Wilson, Manning, S.C.; one brother, William Thomas Mathis (Bert) of Moore, Okla.;
The 92 year old saint who loved children is survived by 15 great-grandchildren and 5 great- great grandchildren.
Carrie enjoyed laughter, family, flowers, cooking "a new recipe" and music. She loved her Lord and Savior. Her favorite all time preacher was the late Adrian Rogers. She will be remembered for her spirit of optimism, 'things could always be worse'. At the age of 65 she went to work at Epworth Methodist Children's Home, Columbia, S.C. and served as a houseparent, sharing her love until her retirement at age 71. She was a member of the campus church. Memorials may be sent to "Children's Playground Fund", New Prospect Baptist Church, 2209 Buffalo Springs Turnpike, Monroe, VA. 24574.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with a memorial service of celebration following at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the loving, caring, and supportive staff of Avante'. May God bless you as you continue to serve loved ones.
