Hilda Ramirez Adame entered eternal rest on December 8, 2021. She was 87. Our mother was born July 29, 1934, in Mercedes, Texas, to Maria De Jesus (Chuchi) and Manuel Noe Ramirez. Mom was one of three siblings: sister Glafira+(Salvador) and Manuel Noe+(Rose).
Mom graduated from Mercedes High School in 1953. She married our dad Julian Adame Jr. and raised their family in Donna. They have three children: Dr. David O. (Dale Anne), Dr. J. Michael (Cordy) and Yvonne (Richard). They have 6 grandchildren: Denise (Juan), David Jr. (Leslie), Dr. Michael Julian (Dr. Fiona), Lexie (Steven), Christina and Lauren. They have 5 great grandchildren: Ava, Rush, Paloma, Salma and Katelyn. She also enjoyed her many nieces and nephews.
At a very early age, mom decided that she would dedicate her life to serving her community though city administration. She would end up serving the municipalities of both Donna and Weslaco. In 1966, she began serving the citizens of Donna and for over 18 years, she held several positions starting as a city clerk, tax assessor collector and city secretary. Then in 1984, for a total of 13 years, she began serving the citizens of Weslaco as city secretary and then city manager.
Mom was also always willing to serve her community through volunteer involvement. Some of her favorite organizations she was involved in were: serving as lector for St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mujeres Unidas: where she was a member and secretary, The Lower Rio Grande Valley City Clerks and City Secretaries as a member and president . She also served as president of this organization for the state of Texas. She also served on the board of directors for the Foster Grandparent Board and became their chairperson. She also served on the American Legion Auxiliary as a member and chairman of the Blue Bonnet Girl State Program. She was also member and president of the City of Donna Crime Stoppers. She served as a member of the Pan American Round Table.
She helped to found and organize the St. Vincent De Paul Society in Donna and served as their treasurer and president.
She was the City of Weslaco's first woman to be appointed City Manager in 1984.
She was also the first woman to be elected as a Councilwoman for the city of Donna from 1988-1991.
She was also the first woman to be elected as Mayor of Donna from 1993-1999.
Among her many honors, her proudest were:
Donna Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year in 1990
Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame in 2005.
While this may be quite an exhaustive list of obligations between her professional and volunteer life, what we, her children knew her for most of all was the love she gave us every day. This love came in many forms. She loved to host many family gatherings where her ability to socialize with everyone was one of her dearest traits. She absolutely enjoyed seeing family and close friends spending time together in her house eating her great food. To that end, she loved to cook. She could cook just about anything under the sun. Of all the mouthwatering dishes which were produced from her stove top or oven, perhaps the one we recall with the most enthusiasm was her lemon meringue pie, it was truly life changing. And the only thing better than all of this amazing food was how she shared her love while cooking it.
Her love evolved to a new level with the arrival of her grandchildren whom she adored dearly. She could be found supporting them on the countless baseball, swimming pool, basketball, volleyball or football sporting events. Her boundless energy never stopped loving them.
We will dearly miss our beloved mother who was greater than life, who gave so much and loved so much. May her loving soul now rest in peace.
