John Barton "J.B." Garrick was born in Dallas County to Russell A. & Ernest Pearl Garrick, who both predeceased him; and he was survived by his first wife, Marjorie Marilynn Ball Garrick of Dallas and their son John Barton Garrick, Jr. Garrick was a Solo Motorcycle Officer in the Traffic Division of the Dallas Police Department, and was one of JFK's motorcycle escorts in 1963.* He was referred to as "J.B." Garrick in the DPD Archives, but he also went by "Bart" and "Barton" Garrick. I ascertained from newspaper accounts that he rose to (at least) the rank of Sergeant.

Garrick was a January '51 graduate of Sunset High School in Dallas, where he was listed in the yearbooks as "Barton Garrick". I was unable to find an official "Senior photo" of him in the 1950 or 1951 yearbooks - but I did find him in a chorus group photo in the 1950 yearbook.

After graduation he married his first wife, Marjorie Marilynn Ball, in October 1951. They then moved to San Diego where he was stationed in the Navy, and was soon sent to Korea where he served in the Korean War. Ms. Ball was also a 1950 Graduate of Sunset High School.

He was married 3 times, first to Marjorie, then to Patricia Ann Dunn, and finally to Wanda Bess Barnett.

*Historical Note:

J.B. Garrick was one of the 3 DPD "Advance Motorcycle" Officers escorting JFK's Motorcade on 11/22/63 (DPD Call #132; DPD Equipment #358). The Advance Motorcycles rode behind the Pilot Car, and they were to scout for trouble about 1/4 mile ahead of the Presidential limousine. The JFK Motorcade Schematic states, "These 3 [Advance] motorcycle officers ride ahead of the motorcade at Main and Houston to cut off Stemmons Freeway traffic". See more details in the Motorcade Schematic I posted.

In the Zapruder film, the 3 Advance Motorcycles can only be seen in the very earliest frames, before the Zapruder film-stop (or splice) at Z-frame 133. From Z-1 thru Z-133 we see the 3 entering and rounding the corner of Elm & Houston. Very early on all 3 can be seen, momentarily, in the intersection of Elm & Houston before Garrick (who is in the position closest to the Texas School Book Depository) disappears behind tree foliage - and into the sprocket holes running along the left side of the film. In the last 14 frames we see Garrick just barely begins to "emerge" before the abrupt stop/splice at Z-133, when the Advance Motorcycles are suddenly replaced by JFK's limo and his motorcycle escorts.

Nonetheless, Garrick was briefly captured on the Zapruder film - however, if you blink, you literally may miss him. The entire 133 frame segment is only about 7 seconds long; and the 14 frames where we see him begin to emerge out of the foliage/sprocket hole area only lasts 0.78 seconds (at 18 fps, which was the Zapruder's camera speed). The best way to examine these fleeting early transition frames is by using the Costella Combined Edit Zapruder frames, where you can advance at your own pace frame by frame and stop to examine each frame. The frames are available here.:

If anyone has a clear, ca. 1963 photo of him in uniform (or plain clothes), would please share it here? I would be very grateful. Thanks in Advance!

Rest in Peace...
