Professional Gymnast, Olympic Bronze Medalist. She was born as Ladislava Aloisie Hniz to Charles Hniz and his wife Sophie Hniz, on May 3, 1924, in New York City, New York. She was educated locally at New York public schools and eventually at the prestigious Hunter College in New York City, New York, and then worked for the New York Central Railroad for sometime. She also worked for a time at IBM in Armonk, New York. She eventually took up gymnastics and practiced at the famous Sokol Gymnastics in New York City, New York, and eventually went onto compete amateurly and professionally. She competed at the 1948 Summer Olympics that was held in London, England. She represented her home country of the United States in the Women's gymnastics team event. Together, with her fellow team members, they came in third place in the Women's gymnastics team event and she won the Bronze Medal for her achievements. She was married to George Bakanic Jr, a World War II veteran with whom she had two daughters. The couple was married from June 16, 1945, until his death in 1988. She passed away in White Plains, New York, on February 26, 2021, at the age of 96. Her husband George predeceased her in 1988, but she was survived by her daughters, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters. Her funeral was held at McMahon, Lyon, and Hart Funeral Home in White Plains, New York, and she was buried in Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hartsdale, New York, with her husband George, and where many other famous New York personalities are also laid to rest.
