Joseph (aged 18 years), formerly a stone mason by trade, was convicted of larceny*¹ on the 9th April 1857 at the Old Bailey and sentenced to four years "penal servitude". Only a few months later, on the 29th November 1857, Joseph died at the Millbank Penitentiary having succumbed to an "effusion of fluid into his chest and Peritonitis" (as per post mortem records). His death, registered on 17th December 1857 with Chas. St C. Bedford, Coroner, Westminster Sanctuary, Westminster being the informant.
Joseph was laid to rest at the City of London Cemetery on the 4 January 1858.

*¹ "On 5 Oct 1856 Joseph broke into the premises of Henry Augustus Bedwell, tobacconist, at Deptford Bridge stealing £15 of Bedwell's money and a gold watch belonging to Mrs Alice Brabrook, the shop manager. Joseph's grandmother had previously lodged at the house and Joseph had occasionally stayed with her. In November Joseph sold the watch to a pawnbroker in Ipswich. Joseph was arrested on 11 Dec, but sentenced on another matter in Ipswich before being tried at the Old Bailey 9 Apr 1857 for the Deptford break-in. He was found guilty of Housebreaking and sentenced to Four Years Penal Servitude".
