Childress Native Promoted to the Top of the TX DPS, Dies in Lubbock

Vernon James Cawthon, 86, passed from this world on December 13, 2017 at home in Lubbock, TX with his daughter, Jann, and granddaughter, B.Kay Webb by his side after being housebound for almost a year. The rest of the family was around his bedside the previous weekend and though he could only whisper, they all had a quality individual visit with him. He kept his wit and wisdom flowing until the time of his death. He will be forever remembered by the Texas DPS, the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club, the Saturday Morning Damron's/Power Sports Bunch, and many other friends, and family.

Vernon was born and raised in Childress, Texas on May 21, 1931 to Nolan Bernard and Willie Mae (Court) Cawthon. He graduated from Childress High School in 1949 and moved from Childress in 1954. Vernon's paternal great-grandparents, Moses and Roxy (King) Cawthon, migrated to Childress County in 1888 from Henry County, Alabama, via Denton County, TX. His paternal grandparents, Stephen Clinton and Mary Henrietta (King) Cawthon, were married in Childress in 1896. Mary Henrietta King Cawthon's parents, John H. King and Mary A. D. Wheeler King migrated to Morgan Mill, Erath County, Texas, also from Alabama and then to Childress County. John H., Henry, and Tilman King came to Childress in 1886 to the original townsite of Henry and were productive early settlers of the county. Vernon's maternal great-grandparents, Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Ella Caddell Court, migrated to the Gulf Coast of Texas from England in the mid-1850s and then his maternal grandparents, Martin Clifton "Buck" and Esther Maybelle McKelvey Court, moved to Childress about 1921 from Coryell County, Tx. Vernon married Shirley LaRue Steed September 12, 1950 in a wedding on horseback which was an annual Childress event. Vernon was employed by Rocketdyne in McGregor, Texas 1954-58. He was employed by the Texas Department of Public Safety from November, 1958 until his retirement September 30, 1993. He served the DPS in Perryton, Pampa, Alice, Tulia, Harlingen, Houston, Tyler, and Lubbock. At the time of his retirement he was Major Cawthon, a rank now known as Regional Commander.



Vernon's remains were cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley in 2008 (daughter of Preston "Pat" S. and Ruby Rainwater Steed), his parents – Nolan and Willie Mae Court Cawthon, brothers -- Bernard Morris "Nort" Cawthon of McGregor, TX and Joe Dan Cawthon of Childress, TX and sister-in-laws, Barbara Ruth Brummett Speights, of Garland, TX and Patricia Ruby Steed Skinner of Childress, TX. He is survived by a brother, Fred Glenn Cawthon and his wife, Lenora "Nonie" (Stevens), of Brownfield, TX; a daughter, Jann Cawthon Webb of Lubbock, TX and her family: granddaughter, Heather Elizabeth Peterson and her husband, Nate, of Granbury, TX; a great-grandson, Brant Guzman of Weirton, WV; a great-granddaughter, Isabella Grace Guzman of Granbury, TX; granddaughter, Stephanie Janene Webb of Brock, TX; great-granddaughter Trinity Elizabeth Kaye Webb of Brock, TX; great-granddaughter, Trindyn Emersyn Kayse "Tiny" Webb of Brock, TX; grandson, Boone Arza Webb and wife, Jessica (Cellon), of Lakeland, FL; great-grandson, Camron Ryan Miller of Lakeland, FL; great-granddaughter, Guinevere Marie Webb of Lakeland, FL; great-grandson, Vincent James Vega Webb of Lakeland, FL; granddaughter, Bethany Kay Webb of Austin, TX; a son, Jay Dean Cawthon and his wife, Lane (Zayko), of Mineral Wells, TX, and their family: granddaughters Tanya and Renee; grandson, Jeffrey Gulley Cawthon of Mineral Wells, TX, great-grandsons Trevor and Travis Cawthon of Weatherford, TX; a sister-in-law, Judy Devoll Larson of Flower Mound, TX and nieces and nephews: Alan Bernard Cawthon of Garland, TX, Steven Glenn Cawthon and his wife, Lana, of Lubbock, TX, Kristi D'Anne Cawthon Moore of Plainview, TX, Freddie Shay Cawthon of Amarillo, TX, Ricky Glenn Cawthon of Rockwall, TX, Randy Lynn Cawthon of Hutchins, TX, Danna Kay Cawthon Kent of Rhome, TX and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.
