Alice May Moss was born in Sheffield, England, the second child of Robert Moss and Sarah Vickers. Her birth was registered at Sheffield in the last quarter of 1901.

Alice's father, Robert, reportedly died in 1903. As a child, she ended up in the care of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, and was immigrated to Canada with a party of children from the homes in 1913. She was 11 years old when she arrived at Saint John aboard the S.S. Corinthian on March 30, 1913, and travelled with her party by train to the Hazelbrae receiving home for girls in Peterborough, Ontario.

Alice married Philip Charles Alexander at London, Ontario on November 1, 1924. Together they had a son named Clayton, and the family moved to Detroit. Later, Alice and Philip relocated to Clearwater, Florida for their retirement.
