Ethel Elaine Overturf, 78, formerly of Ellington passed away Monday (May 24, 2021) in Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing, Gerry.

A lifelong area resident she was born July 30, 1942 in Jamestown, the daughter of the late Elwood and Eleanor Cross Martin.

Ethel attended Maple Grove High School and was a dedicated homemaker for most of her life. Ethel was known for her unforgettable tenacity, spunk, and charm; she was blessed with a beautiful singing voice, a love of music, and a colossal gift-to-gab. Her thrifty nature made penny-pinching, coupon-clipping, and bargain shopping a mastered form of art. Weekends were spent buzzing around the county in her little car 'yard saling', sure to find some sort of useful, second-hand treasure. She was loved for her distinct way of being drawn to mischief and shenanigans, leading to entertaining stories, which she liked to repeat often. Through the years Ethel, along with her husband, enjoyed camping with friends and family, ATV riding and snowmobiling- (to which Ethel could always be found on the back holding on for dear life!) Whether working along side her husband on the family farm, cutting wood, or hunting, she was by his side, typically ending the day with a humorous mis-hap and yet another knee-slapping story to tell followed by her unmistakable laugh that could be heard a mile away. She lived a fulfilling life on 'Simple Abundance', making the most out of little and loving a whole lot.

Surviving are three children: Carol Overturf (Thomas Leichner) of Ellington, Lori (Russell) Polizzi of Conewango Valley, NY, Pete (Cherie) Martin of Cherry Creek; seven grandchildren: Lyle Delahoy, Jeremy Delahoy, Amy Martin, Tristin Martin, Paul Martin, Michael Martin and Kayley Guy (Alex Dill); five great grandchildren: Ryder Adams, Seager Dill, Karena and Michalla Hitchcock, and Evelyn Delahoy.

Impatiently waiting on the other side, her husband Gary L. Overturf whom she married August 24, 1968 in Ellington, who died November 16, 2018, reunited where they will resume their eternal dance. Also preceded in death were a daughter, Karen Martin and two brothers: Robert and Lyle Martin.

As per Ethel's wishes no memorial service or visitation will be observed, but well-wishers are encouraged to carry a fond memory, especially one that brings with it a belly full of laughter, that's the way she'd like to be remembered. As a final tribute a Butterfly Release for family will be held at a later date sending her butterfly kisses. "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die; the song has ended but the melody lingers on."

Inurnment will be in Gerry Hill Cemetery.
